Mission Statement:
The Riffs Show Choir, established by Berkeley Playhouse founder, Elizabeth McKoy, exists to provide an exceptional life experience through an engagement with the performing arts that enriches the lives of middle school students in underserved schools throughout the East Bay. Berkeley Playhouse established the Riffs as the embodiment of a serious commitment to community, diversity, inclusion, and empowerment.
Description:
The Riffs are a diverse group of talented, enthusiastic middle schoolers who collaborate with a team of professional choreographers, directors, and musicians to rehearse and ultimately perform a cabaret-style show of contemporary pieces for their community. Through the Riffs curriculum students experience a sense of artistic ownership, creativity, integrity, and freedom of expression. The Riffs promote an atmosphere of acceptance and growth mindset, where every student is welcome. By working with theater professionals, students develop greater musicianship by learning and executing various skills such as proper use of breath support, musical phrasing, interpretation, posture, stage presence, and other techniques. The Riffs creative teaching team is committed to equipping and empowering individual students through performance as a vehicle for artistic discovery and character development.
